- Botanical name: Cucumis metuliferus (family Cucurbitaceae) .
Variety: Kiwano - The fruits are small, between 9 and 15cm, oval in shape and with an average weight between 200 and 300g.
- The skin is bright orange-yellow , resembling an overripe cucumber, and has numerous spines. The fruit's core is jelly-like and green .
- The taste is unusual for our environment – a combination of cucumber and banana with a hint of lemon.
- Growing can be done in a greenhouse or outdoors, and it is advisable to sow the seed in a pot or bucket in advance to ensure the necessary temperature and moisture in the initial stage.
- It is necessary to use a frame or net to grow the plant to ensure optimal growth, aeration, and convenient harvesting.
Growing recommendations
- The seedlings are ready for transplanting outdoors when they have 2-3 true leaves and a constant soil temperature above 20°C . If growing outside a greenhouse, it is best to do so in a sunny and wind-protected location.
- Watering should be moderate and at regular intervals. Avoid infrequent watering with copious amounts of water!
- For nutrient-poor soils, we recommend fertilizing with fertilizers.
- The fruit is ready to harvest when the skin is bright orange-yellow and slightly firm. As the skin softens, the flavor and texture change.
- The inner green part of the fruit is consumed, and salt, sugar, or a salad can be added.
